It is disheartening to witness the degradation of our beautiful beaches due to littering, a stark reminder of the need for environmental consciousness. However, amidst the dismay, a foreigner named Peter Rollett has emerged as a beacon of hope, gaining widespread praise from Malaysians for his unwavering dedication to cleaning Penang's beaches.

#His Initial Effort
Hailing from the United Kingdom, Peter Rollett began his mission to restore the pristine beauty of Penang's beaches by addressing the issue through official channels. In December 2023, he emailed the cleaning department, highlighting the litter around the beach area at the end of Straits Quay. Expressing gratitude for the swift response in cleaning the area, Peter set the stage for his personal commitment to the cause.

Taking matters into his own hands, Peter commenced his beach cleanup journey, documenting his efforts on the Penang Walkabout Facebook group. In one of his posts, he revealed that over 100 plastic straws were found along the car park and tide line in the aftermath of a storm.

#Sustained Efforts
Undeterred by the challenges, Peter continued his regular cleanup routine, sharing his progress on social media. His most recent post on February 17, 2024, garnered significant attention with 3.5k likes and over 180 comments, mostly expressing gratitude for his commendable actions. He even welcomed others to join his effort in cleaning up the beaches in Penang.

#Peter's Advocacy and Challenges
In response to a user's comment, Peter shed light on his interactions with the local authorities. He acknowledged the assistance provided by the MBPP (Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang) but also highlighted areas where their attention seemed lacking. Expressing concern about the pervasive litter issue, he emphasized the need for education in schools and government initiatives.

"I only do (it) for exercise and to let people know," says Peter in his reply.

“Most people that live (in) the beach area appreciate what I do. I do not expect others to do what I do. (It) is just upsetting to know this is (the) same all over the world," he added.
