Two Malaysian students lost their lives in a tragic car accident at Lake Tekapo, New Zealand, while three others sustained injuries.
The Malaysian High Commission in Wellington informed Bernama that the unfortunate deceased students were Meq Asman Akif and Wan Nur Alina Alyssa, both from the University of Canterbury.
The three injured students are Nur Firas Wafiyyah and Lya Issable, who are students at the same university, and Faris Fairusham from Victoria University of Wellington.
It was reported that the two deceased students had plans to return home soon to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, but now those plans have been shattered.
Lake Tekapo is situated approximately 700 kilometers southwest of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. The accident occurred at around 1:45 p.m. local time on Saturday (8:45 a.m. Malaysia time).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington, confirmed the incident, stating that it involved five Malaysian students. The three injured individuals were airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in the South Island for urgent medical treatment.
In a statement, the Ministry said, "The Malaysian High Commission in Wellington, with the assistance of the Malaysian community in Christchurch, is providing appropriate consular assistance to the deceased and injured students and their families to ensure the welfare of all those involved."
"If the next of kin decide to repatriate the bodies to Malaysia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Malaysian High Commission will provide assistance."
The accident involved two cars and a motorcycle, according to New Zealand police. The motorcyclist died at the scene, while the two other fatalities were from the same car, both Malaysian students.
