While most 17-year-olds are focused on school or hanging out with friends, Chen Wei Sheng had a different goal cycling solo across four countries. Covering an incredible 3,300 kilometers, he pedaled from Kedah, Malaysia, to Nanning, China, in just 27 days, turning his Lunar New Year into an unforgettable adventure.
A Journey Across Borders
Chen set off on 17 January, determined to push his limits. His route took him through Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam before finally reaching Nanning, the capital of China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The journey wasn't without obstacles border officials were skeptical that someone so young could travel alone, and at one point, he had to pay 500 baht (RM65) to cross into Thailand.
Facing Challenges with Grit
Not all challenges came from the road. In Vietnam, he encountered a threatening motorcyclist, forcing him to stay alert. Harsh weather conditions also tested his endurance, sometimes leaving him unable to bathe for days. Despite exhaustion, he stayed motivated, averaging 80-90 kilometers per day.
Cultural Experiences on the Road
Chen fully embraced the local cultures he encountered. He sampled bamboo worms in Thailand, admired massive Buddha statues carved into mountains in Laos, and navigated unfamiliar roads with ease, thanks to his Thai mother's influence on his language skills. Unlike most teens who dream of getting a car, Chen's biggest concern was maintaining proper tire pressure.
Minimalist Travel, Maximum Adventure
Traveling light, he carried four power banks, and a Visa card, and only booked hotels when necessary. Otherwise, he camped out, relying on the kindness of strangers who allowed him to pitch his tent. To Chen, cycling is more than just a mode of travel its a way to experience the world authentically.
An Inspiring Passion
Chen's love for cycling started when he met a Chinese cycling enthusiast at his father's shop. During the pandemic, he pedaled 2,400 kilometers around Malaysia in 25 days, and at 15, he rode 1,900 kilometers to Bangkok in just 19 days. His endurance comes from regular exercise and an adventurous spirit.
Future Aspirations
Now back home, Chen is preparing for his SPM examinations with the same determination that fueled his journey. His dream? To become a police officer perhaps bringing the same resilience and independence to public service that carried him across international borders.
His father, a proud supporter, admires his son's courage and independence, proving that sometimes, the most extraordinary adventures begin with a single pedal stroke.
