A husband and wife tragically lost their lives in an accident as they were returning from a family member's birthday celebration on Sunday evening. The incident occurred at the Shortcut near the U-turn, Padimas Point, Sabah, at approximately 6:50 pm.
Both aged around 60, the couple was found trapped in their Proton Saga car and pronounced dead at the scene. Superintendent Sammy Newton, the Penampang District Police Chief, reported that the accident involved a pickup truck and the Proton Saga.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the pickup truck, travelling from Kota Kinabalu towards Donggongon, collided with the Proton Saga, which was heading from Donggongon and purportedly attempting a U-turn.
"The medical officer from Queen Elizabeth Hospital (HQE) confirmed the unfortunate demise of the Proton Saga's driver and passenger at the scene," Superintendent Sammy Newton stated in a Sunday press release. He further informed that the pickup truck driver sustained severe injuries and was taken to HQE Kota Kinabalu for additional medical care.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to HQE I, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, for further examination. Authorities are actively investigating the incident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 and urge any witnesses to come forward with relevant information to aid the investigation.
