A couple recently revealed that their car was almost stolen by a man claiming to be a tow truck driver when they stopped at a highway rest area.
The couple, @empatberanak, shared a video on TikTok recounting the incident at the R&R station near Ayer Keroh, Melaka, on the way back from Johor through the North-South Expressway.
They explained that initially, another car was in the rest area carrying a family. However, the man ignored the other car and waited until the family left the parking lot before approaching the couple, identifying himself as a tow truck driver. He stated that he had received instructions to tow away their car.
The couple asked the man why their car needed to be towed, and they insisted on contacting the BMW dealership for confirmation. The man didn't object and even advised them, saying, "Feel free to contact the BMW dealership, but don't tell them I'm here."
Realizing it could be a scam, the husband suspected that the man was impersonating a tow truck driver to steal their BMW. Without hesitation, he pulled his wife into the car, preparing to leave. Shortly after they got in the car, the man claiming to be a tow truck driver also left the scene, confirming the couple's suspicion that they had encountered a car thief.
The couple urged everyone to be vigilant and not easily hand over their car keys to anyone, especially those claiming to be tow truck drivers, as they may be attempting to steal vehicles. They also called on people to share this information with friends and family to prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.
