A flight heading to Nadi, Fiji, turned into a tense ordeal when a 69-year-old woman caused a commotion mid-air, forcing the cabin crew to restrain her and tape her mouth shut after she shouted racial slurs and vulgarities.
The dramatic incident was captured in several viral videos circulating online. In one clip, the woman accused a flight attendant of "abusing" her, labeling the situation as "criminal." When a crew member sat beside her in an attempt to de-escalate the tension, she responded with insults and an offensive remark.
Another video shared on Facebook shows the woman at the back of the plane as two flight attendants struggle to manage her unruly behavior. Passengers onboard described the comments she made as offensive and inappropriate.
According to news.com.au, a passenger who recorded the incident said the crew had no choice but to restrain the woman using duct tape due to her aggressive behavior. She reportedly yelled and resisted while the crew attempted to subdue her.
The altercation began roughly halfway through the 11-hour flight. Witnesses stated that the situation escalated when the woman's husband requested to be seated elsewhere after she started raising her voice. When the cabin crew refused to disclose his new location, the woman's anger spiraled further, leading to a heated argument.
Upon landing in Nadi on January 20, 2025, the woman was arrested and charged with one count of being an unruly passenger under the Fiji Civil Aviation Act. She was later fined FJ$500 (approximately $345 USD) by the Nadi Magistrates Court. Once the fine was paid, the stop departure order against her was lifted, and the case was discharged.
