If you want to place some plants at home but the space is not near to any source of sunlight, except Syngonium, Sansevieria, Pothos and Monstera you may choose plant like Aglaonema, Dieffenbachia, Philodendron or fittonia which able to tolerate full shade condition. Those plants highly adapt to low light conditions and grow very well under full shade conditions unlike the other semi shade indoor plants or outdoor plants, they must move outdoors to expose to direct or indirect sunlight occasionally to continue growing flourish. So, if certain spaces do not receive bright indirect sunlight, we should choose to place full shade plants to save the trouble of moving in and out of the houseplants for exposure to sunlight!
Philodendron
May tolerate 80%-90% of shade condition, prefer a high humidity environment and love occasionally misting for growing better. Like the monstera, philodendron hederaceum are climbing plants, keep pruning may accelerate more branches growing or prepare a coco coir post for the vine of philodendron to climb. Philodendron hederaceum comprises different colours of leaves and similar leaves shape. It is suitable to make it as a hanging plant and make the long vine dragging naturally.
Aglaonema
Aglaonema may tolerate 75%-90% of shade also, Aglaonema comprises many types of varieties also with different leaves colour but similar leaves shape. It prefers high humidity and requires more water compared to syngonium, Sansevieria and Monstera. Lack of water will make its leaves become droopy. Therefore, weekly at least watering thrice if the air humidity is in normal range. The watering times may be reduced if a humidifier is used in the house around the indoor plants. Examples of Aglaonema are Aglaonema Silver Queen with Dark green and light green leaves colour, Aglaonema donna carmen with green and pink colour interval.
Dieffenbachia
Dieffenbachia is also one of the easiest growing plants. It could tolerate full shade to semi shade of sun exposure. However, it requires a high level of water. Lack of water will make the plant become droopy. Exposure to bright sunlight may make the leaves colour fading. Prefer high level of water, watering frequency similar to Aglaonema. LIke the Aglaonema, dieffenbachia comprises many different varieties with different leaves patterns. We may make use of the different leaves pattern to break.
Fittonia
Fittonia is highly tolerant to full shade growing conditions. It is quite hard to grow well for a beginner who lacks experience in gardening. It is sensitive to drought conditions and its roots easily rot if they are over watering. However, Its shade tolerant and sensitive to drought characteristics is suitable for use as a plant in terrarium. The closed spaces in terrarium stop the water released by plants through transpiration trapped in the terrarium. It could prevent loss of water and cause drought conditions. Besides that, terrariums are usually placed in houses where there is a lack of sunlight exposure. And the fittonia is the most suitable plant to set terrarium.
After we know which plant could tolerate dark conditions and we have plenty of choices of plants that could tolerate full shade conditions. Then we don’t need to choose unsuitable plants which need more sun exposure but are forced to place in the dark place. As a result, we could save the trouble of moving in and move out our indoor plant weekly to make the indoor plants grow more flourish in an indoor environment.
