A video recently went viral on Facebook, garnering over 11k likes and 600 comments as netizens expressed their concerns over the controversial footage.
The video showcased a pet owner filming her dog standing in the midst of what appears to be a group of crocodiles resting in a kitchen while she asked the dog to come back to her.
"Stupid dog, come here," says the pet owner in a casual tone.
The dog then skips back and sits beside its owner, appearing content. Although one of the crocodiles moved and almost bit the dog's leg, the dog was unharmed.
Netizens commented on the post, expressing concern for the dog's safety. However, the pet owner assured them that it was not dangerous at all.
It turns out that those are not crocodiles but caimans, members of the Caimaninae genus, which is more similar to an alligator than a crocodile. Moreover, they are the pet owner's pets too!
Despite their similar appearance, caimans are generally smaller in size and have a U-shaped snout. The pet owner added that caimans tend to be more timid, which is why those caimans are afraid of her dog.
She explains that the caiman did not purposefully attempt to bite the dog; rather, it was merely the caiman's reflexes.
She further adds that one of the caimans ran away after the dog barked at it, leaving behind the meat that was previously in the caiman's mouth, to assure the netizens that the dog is safe.
The video was shared by the pet owner herself, who is a caiman trainer, on her Facebook page. There, she promotes activities and courses for people to learn more about reptiles.
