In a distressing incident that unfolded at Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) power generation room in Taman Seri Bayu, Bayan Lepas, Penang, 12-year-old Mohd Dawisy Zarif Mohd Khairi suffered electrical burns, leaving his family shocked and seeking urgent medical attention.
Mohd Dawisy's mother, Suhana Samsudin, a 37-year-old working at the Penang International Airport, discovered the incident through a WhatsApp group message. A video shared in the group captured the severity of her son's condition, prompting her to rush home immediately upon learning about the incident around 5 p.m.
The distressed mother shared her harrowing experience, stating, "When I arrived, my son was still there (at the incident site) and was taken to the surau (prayer room) before being transported to the Penang Hospital (HPP) with the assistance of the Civil Defence Force (APM). Throughout that time, my son remained conscious, calling out to me, saying, 'Mom, please help me. I'm in pain... help, I'm hot.'"
The father, Mohd Khairi Abdul Ghani, 38, who was on duty in Lumut, Perak, at the time of the incident, rushed home upon receiving the distressing news. Expressing shock, he shared that playing football in the neighborhood was a common practice for children, including his son, but this was the first time such a serious incident occurred.
"I don't know how the incident happened, but I was told he went in there (the power generation room) to retrieve the ball, while his twin did not join as he was sleeping at home. My son's body has 50 percent burns, and at this point, he is still under medical observation and sedation," he explained.
Mohd Dawisy, a cheerful and active student at SK Bayan Lepas 2, was known for his enthusiasm in playing football, even representing his school in the sport. His father expressed hope for his son's recovery, emphasizing his resilience.
In response to the incident, TNB released a statement on Friday, pledging comprehensive support for Mohd Dawisy's medical treatment. TNB's Head of Zone Asset for Pulau Pinang, Ir. Anan Eyam, visited the family at the Penang Hospital, providing immediate financial assistance to alleviate their burden.
TNB, in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Energy Commission, is actively involved in an internal investigation to ascertain the circumstances of the incident. The company emphasizes its commitment to safety, acknowledging the need for a thorough inquiry.
The incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. on Thursday, as Mohd Dawisy played football with friends, and the ball entered the TNB power generation room. Preliminary information suggests the child entered the room to retrieve the ball, fell, suffered an electric shock, and was subsequently transported to HPP for further treatment, as stated by Southwest District Police Chief Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal.
