A heated parking dispute on a street in Cheras has resulted in residents collectively facing a massive fine of RM30,000. The conflict, which began over parking space reservations, escalated when residents involved lodged complaints against one another, prompting enforcement action by local authorities.
According to China Press, the issue started when one resident raised concerns about neighbors placing plastic barriers in front of their homes to reserve parking spots. This led to a complaint being filed with the Kajang Municipal Council, which issued warnings to the residents responsible.
However, the warnings failed to resolve the matter. Instead, another neighbor retaliated by filing a complaint with the Kajang City Council about vehicles parked in front of their home. In response, enforcement officers issued fines for improper street parking to all the residents along the street.
The fines, which total RM30,000, were issued two weeks ago. In an effort to mediate the conflict, city councilor Tan Kah Hoe visited the neighborhood to understand the situation. His efforts, however, were met with resistance as residents engaged in prolonged arguments.
"There are other places to park locally. The problem is not that there are no parking spaces, but the attitude of not giving way to each other. They argued for more than an hour."
Tan advised those affected by the fines to provide utility bills as proof of residency to request a waiver. He also urged the residents to practice tolerance and mutual understanding, emphasizing that enforcement actions were not a solution and only served to harm the community.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of neighborly cooperation and the repercussions of unresolved disputes within residential areas.
