COVID-19 | Chinese Researchers Develop New Drug That Provides Immunity And Shortens Recovery Time
Researchers at Peking University, China, have been developing a new drug that not only have the power to shorten the recovery time of COVID-19 patients, but also able to provide short-term immunity from the virus.
The report on the research has been published in the scientific journal ‘Cell’.
According to Dr Sunney Xie, director of the university’s Beijing Advanced Innovation Centre for Genomics, the drug was successful at the animal testing stage. He said the research team injected neutralizing antibodies into infected mice and there was a decrease in viral load by 2,500, this indicates that the potential drug has curative effects.

Dr. Xie added that the neutralizing antibodies used in the drug were produced by human immune system to prevent viruses from entering cells. The research team extracted the antibodies from blood samples of 60 recovered patients. The antibodies were said to have potential ‘therapeutic effect’ against the coronavirus and able to shorten the recovery time.
