The family of G Vijaya Lakshmi, an Indian national who tragically lost her life in the Masjid India sinkhole incident, has been provided with financial assistance of RM30,000 by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). This support was given just before the family's return to India on September 1, according to a report by Astro Awani.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif emphasized that the RM30,000 provided by DBKL is a goodwill gesture, not a form of compensation. She clarified that the aid was delivered a day after the search and rescue (SAR) operation was officially called off, as a way to extend the city's support to the grieving family.
The Masjid India sinkhole incident, which took place earlier, had deeply shocked the local community. DBKLs financial gesture aims to offer some relief to the victim's family as they cope with the devastating loss of their loved one.
The SAR operation, which lasted nine days, was conducted by local authorities in hopes of recovering G Vijaya Lakshmi. Despite their extensive efforts, the search was ultimately unsuccessful, and the operation was officially called off last week.
In light of the tragedy, the Malaysian Cabinet is also expected to discuss possible compensation for the family. G Vijaya Lakshmi had fallen into the sinkhole while in the Masjid India area of Kuala Lumpur, leading to a tragic sequence of events.
DBKL's financial aid is a reflection of the city's solidarity with the affected family during this difficult time.
