Are you sure that your sunscreen have SPF 50? | The Purito's sunscreen scandal

10-Dec-2020
By Trissss

A week ago, a sunscreen saga was happening in the skincare world. One of the sunscreen from Purito was exposed to be advertising their SPF wrongly.

In simple words, Purito lied about their SPF of their sunscreen. It turned out it has roughly around SPF 19

How shocking it is! Let's dive deeper on the whole event.

A company decided to bring the sunscreen to test

@Incidecodercom is a company founded by a computer scientist turned by a cosmetic formulator.

The company's vision is to help the public to understand the ingredient list in their cosmetic product.

Their website provides a portal for the public to snap a photo of their product's ingredient list or type in the name of the ingredient.

By doing that, the public would know what they actually use on their face

Whether it is a heavy chemical or highly reactive ingredient that causes your face redness and sensitivity.

You will find out with a click and truly understand (easily) like a cosmetic chemist.

No one would actually test the product, including YOU!

Let's just say fact-checking is not for everyone. Yes, including YOU.

When did you actually doubt the product you are using is lying to you? Probably not that often.

Because we usually buy a product based on a celebrity, a friend or the salesperson in the store.

Even if you did suspect the product, you don't actually dig deeper.

So, @incidecodercom did it for you. But, how?

They took it to two labs to test out.

They took the Purito's sunscreen to two labs: a Polish and a German lab.

The result revealed that Purito's sunscreen has only SPF 19.

What did Purito respond?

Basically, Purito is saying that they trusted the KFDA which is the Korean's Minister of Food and Drug Safety.

Their sunscreen was legally recognised by the KFDA which is a governmental department that handing these issues.

They did not doubt the manufacturer that makes sunscreen because the manufacturer was long established.

As the manufacturer also registered under KFDA.

Purito owned up their mistakes and provided a refund policy.

So... should we hate Purito now?

We should give it a benefit of doubt. As this issue is not only about Purito itself, the bigger issue here is KFDA approved the manufacturer.

Purito and Klairs, depended on the government-approved list of the manufacturer to make skincare or cosmetic product.

This could be a good check and balance for the government and the manufacturer.

It raises a great awareness for the public to beware on what they are using on their face.

Also, for the beauty company to do more fact check before making the product.

KFDA, the governmental's department should keep checking the manufacturer to make sure the manufacturers are always obeying the law.

Should you continue to use it?

Yes, absolutely. There is nothing wrong to continue using it. As it still has SPF but just lower SPF.

It still works as a sunscreen but you need to reapply it more to maintain the SPF.

So far, only Purito Malaysia addressed the same issue. Klairs Malaysia has not responded to the scandal.

Wishtrend which is a global beauty product retailer has responded to the scandal.

Hermo(sells Purito's product) did not respond to the scandal as of now.
