A family who purchased organic eggs online fell victim to a scam, losing over SGD 150,000 (approximately MYR 522,198.98) in savings.
57-year-old Singh told CNA that on November 26th, his wife came across an advertisement on Facebook selling organic eggs. After clicking to order the eggs, scammers posing as sellers communicated with them through WhatsApp.
The scammers requested Singh to make a deposit through an application and provided a link.
After downloading the application, Singh ordered 60 eggs, but the process led him to a payment page resembling that of a bank. When he attempted to log in with his password, he was unsuccessful.
The next day, Singh received a call from the bank's customer service representative informing him of a large credit card transaction. Upon checking their bank accounts, Singh discovered that their savings had been emptied by the scammers.
Singh mentioned that he was unaware of how the fraudsters obtained his credit card and other bank information. He stated that he did not receive any transfer notifications and did not receive a one-time password for transaction approval.
The affected banks confirmed that they are aware of the situation and are in touch with the affected couple.
The Singapore Police have confirmed receiving a report from the Singh couple, and an investigation is currently underway.
This incident is believed to be a case of malicious software fraud. In the first half of this year, Singapore recorded over 750 such cases, with losses totalling at least SGD 10 million (approximately MYR 35,014,598.47).
