For most 11-year-olds, toys, games, and outdoor play dominate their free time. However, Muhammad Daim Zakwan from Sungai Udang, Melaka, stands out with a unique passion for repairing electrical appliances skill he picked up after watching countless YouTube videos on the subject.
According to his mother, Norlianna Harun, 36, Daim's fascination with cables, wires, and electrical gadgets began at the tender age of six. Unlike other children his age, who prefer traditional toys, Daim found joy in experimenting with electrical components and learning the names and functions of items like wires, fans, and light bulbs.
"Sometimes, he knows more than us about these things," Norlianna shared. He's managed to repair lights, fans, and even vacuum cleaners at home. Recently, he even made a homemade fan using boxes.
According to Sinar Harian, while Daim's father shares a similar interest in hands-on repair work, his focus lies in fixing cars. Despite the difference in specialties, Norlianna believes her husband's enthusiasm may have inspired their son's hobby.
However, this budding talent comes with its challenges. Daim has injured himself several times while repairing electrical items and has even caused power outages at home.
"The first incident happened last November, and it happened again just last week when he tinkered with the wiring," Norlianna said. "Sometimes, I worry because of the injuries he's sustained, but instead of being discouraged, he seems to enjoy it even more."
Norlianna acknowledges that many people see Daim's interest as a promising talent. However, as a mother, she remains cautious, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balance between his passion and education.
"For now, I want him to focus on both his studies and his interests. He's still very young, so there's plenty of time for him to explore this hobby further without neglecting his academics," she said.
As Daim continues to hone his skills, his story serves as a testament to the power of curiosity and self-driven learning. With proper guidance and support, his childhood hobby could one day transform into a lifelong career in electrical engineering or a related field. For now, his family is focused on nurturing his interests while keeping safety and education at the forefront.
