A Penang-born man in the United States missed his opportunity to cast his vote in last year's 15th General Election, but in this state election, he is determined to ensure his ballot reaches Malaysia on time.
When sharing his experience, Alex Toh said he was lucky to receive his ballot on time. He even volunteered to collect postal voters ballots in the Sacramento area in California, and passed them to a runner in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Despite his car being broken into on the same night he did these errands, it did not discourage him. He said due to the broken window on his car, he and his family drove for two hours in the cold weather.
He said since the runner was scheduled to fly off today, he had to send the ballots via overnight courier service, which cost him a whopping RM360. "My point is, we have been through so much just to cast our vote.
"For those locally in Malaysia, please do your part," he said in a Facebook posting recently.
The post went viral with over 64 shares so far. Many people praised his determination to fulfil his duty as a Malaysian although he lives 14,000km away from his home country.
"Thank you for volunteering your time and votes, Alex Toh & Mrs Toh," said Facebook user Wei Tang.
Bagan member of parliament Lim Guan Eng also lauded his effort to exercise his right to vote.
"Thank you, sir for voting to defend our nation's future.
"Please come back and vote to ensure that Malaysia respects diversity and the rule of law, remains a multiracial nation that is democratic and does not target Malaysians based on race or religion," said Lim.
