An elderly woman was killed when the Proton Saga she was driving veered off the road and plunged into a river while crossing the Balok Makmur bridge.
In the incident, which occurred around 10:30 AM yesterday, the victim, Paridah Dollah, 67, from Taman Inderapura, Jerantut, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her husband, Abd. Aziz Ahmad, 66, suffered breathing difficulties and is receiving treatment in the emergency ward at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA). Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
Kuantan District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd. Zahari Wan Busu, stated that initial investigations revealed the elderly couple, both retirees, were traveling in their blue Proton Saga from Balok Makmur towards Seberang Balok.
"Upon reaching the location, the car driven by the victim is believed to have lost control and veered into the river. As a result of the accident, the victim was pronounced dead on-site, while her husband was taken to HTAA for further treatment," he said.
Wan Mohd. Zahari added that the preliminary investigation suggested that the accident was caused by a loss of vehicle control.
"The location is a one-lane, two-way road with no lane divider. The road is narrow, and the bridge surface is flat with dry conditions. Lighting was sufficient, and the weather was clear at the time of the incident," he explained.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
