As the head chef and co-owner of the upscale dining establishment Mia in Bangkok, a Malaysian woman has achieved the incredible feat of earning one Michelin star.
The Borneo Post claims that 30-year-old Michelle Goh, a native of Kuching, Sarawak, is the first Sarawakian to ever win the coveted award and the youngest female chef in Malaysia.
At the Thailand MICHELIN Guide Ceremony in December of last year, Goh's restaurant, Mia, which she co-owns with her husband, Thai chef Pongcharn Russell, was awarded the 2024 Michelin star.
Goh's culinary adventure, which culminated in her success in operating her own restaurant, started when she was just eighteen years old at Le Cordon Bleu Sydney.
She then trained under renowned chef Anna Polyviou at Shangri-La Sydney, worked under renowned Australian chef Neil Perry at the three-hatted Rockpool (now Eleven Bridge), then worked under Jason Atherton at Pollen in Singapore before relocating to Thailand.
Goh's dual roles as head of pastry and modern German restaurant Suhring in Bangkok where the latter was awarded two Michelin stars speak volumes about her skills. She opened Mia in 2019 with her husband, who is also a top chef named in Forbes' 30 under 30 Asia.
The MICHELIN Guide indicates that Mia is a modern two-story residence that serves Asian-inspired modern European food in three different dining areas.
It suggests the restaurant's 'Taste of Mia' seasonal menu, which offers vegetarian and vegan options and "shows off dishes with complex, well-balanced flavours" in five or eight courses.
In addition to being awarded a Michelin star, Mia was recognized by BK Magazine as one of Bangkok's Top 100 Restaurants and as the recipient of the 'Best Dessert Menu' honour in the year 2023.
