A 43-year-old foreign man was arrested by police on Sunday following the gruesome discovery of the bodies of two females in a drain behind an abandoned building along Sultan Abdul Halim Highway. The bodies are believed to be those of a 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter.
According to NST, Kota Setar police chief, Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad, confirmed the suspect's arrest, stating that he is believed to be the husband of one victim and the father of the other. His detention was made possible through swift police intelligence work. The man is expected to be brought before the Alor Star magistrate's court later today for a remand application to facilitate further investigation.
"The arrest took place at 9 p.m. at a mosque in Bukit Pinang. Police are continuing investigations to uncover the motive behind the incident," Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati said in a statement.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Authorities were alerted to the scene after receiving distress calls around 5:04 p.m. regarding the discovery of the bodies. According to Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati, the bodies were found lying close to each other in a small drain, with one face-down and the other face-up. Both were fully clothed but had no identification documents. Initial examinations revealed slash wounds on their necks.
The bodies, believed to be foreign nationals, were subsequently transported to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital's Forensic Department for a post-mortem examination.
"The police urge the public not to speculate on the matter, as it could cause unnecessary concern in the community," Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati cautioned. She also called on anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The chilling discovery of the two bodies has sent shockwaves through the community, as police work to uncover the motive behind the tragic event.
