The Penang government is reportedly planning on building a third bridge that'd connect the mainland and the island, having been completed the undersea tunnel's feasibility studies.
“Regarding the proposal to replace the undersea tunnel with a bridge, at this point, the feasibility study conducted by Consortium Zenith Construction (CZC) is for the undersea tunnels only and not for any bridges,” Penang Chief's Minister Chow Kon Yeow has said in a statement today.
The undersea tunnel project has received negative critics as some have expressed the views that it is far too costly and an endangerment to the environment, and a suggestion has been raised to replace the tunnel with an elevated bridge instead to cut the cost and minimize the danger against nature.
The undersea tunnel is originally part of the state's infrastructure projects under the Penang Transport Master Plan, which costs RM 350 million altogether. According to Chow, the official presentation for the proposal of Penang's possible third bridge will be put forth during the state's next exco meeting.
Will Penangites witness the creation of another bridge in the near future? We'll have to wait and see.
