In an inspiring act of integrity, a Singaporean woman chose honesty over fortune after discovering a winning 4D lottery ticket worth S$10,000 (approximately RM32,900) at a temple. Instead of keeping it, she handed it over to the police in hopes of finding its rightful owner.
The incident occurred on January 3 at the Loyang Tua Pek Kong temple, where 63-year-old Chen Yiming was attending a lion dance performance. As she enjoyed the festivities, she noticed a lottery ticket lying on the ground. Despite searching for its owner, she was unable to locate them.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Ms. Chen revealed that the ticket contained bets for the 4D draws on February 8 and 9. The unknown punter had placed S$2 (approximately RM6.60) each on the numbers 3388 and 8833 for both big and small bets.
Being an avid 4D player herself, Ms. Chen understood the significance of the ticket and decided to monitor the draw results. She believed that the rightful owner would be anxious if their numbers were picked.
To her surprise, the number 3388 won the 1st Prize in the February 9 draw. Upon realizing this, she immediately took the ticket to the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre and reported the discovery.
When asked if she ever considered claiming the winnings for herself, Ms. Chen firmly stated, "What's mine is mine. I don't want money that's not mine." Her principled stance has since garnered widespread praise.
According to Singapore law, dishonestly misappropriating property can lead to legal consequences, including up to two years in jail, a fine, or both. While the rightful owner of the ticket has yet to come forward, Ms. Chen's integrity serves as a reminder that honesty prevails even in moments of temptation.
