KUALA TERENGGANU: A car driven by two men suspected to be under the influence of drugs, crashed into seven vehicles that were stopped at a traffic light in Kuala Ibai, here, yesterday.
In the incident at about 6.10pm, the two suspects who are in their 30s were arrested by the police after the Perodua Axia car they were driving stopped in the middle of the road, believed to have been damage due to colliding with another vehicle.
Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rahim Md Din, said the incident was said to have occurred when the suspect was traveling from Chendering towards the city center.
After passing through the Kuala Ibai Bridge, he said, the car in which the suspect was driving was believed to have failed to brake properly and collided with seven other vehicles that were stopping at red traffic lights.
Following that, he said, all the vehicles were damaged, while all the drivers involved had lodged a report at the Traffic Police Station, Kuala Terengganu District Police Headquarters (IPD).
"No casualties or injuries were reported. The two suspects were taken to the Kuala Terengganu IPD for an initial urine screening test before they tested positive for methamphetamine.
"The case is being investigated under Section 15 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving," he said in a statement, here, today
He, however, advised the public not to make any negative speculations about the incident, apart from avoiding taking legal action at their own hands if involved in a road accident.
Meanwhile, one of the victims of the accident, Shazana Salim, 36, said the incident happened when she and her two children were on their way home in Kampung Gong Pak Maseh after buying goods at a shop in Chendering.
"While at the traffic light, I heard a sound like a crash. As soon as I looked in the side mirror, I saw that there was a red car driving at high speed in the middle of the road and it crashed into several other vehicles.
"Seeing the incident, I was shocked and tried to move the vehicle but my side mirrors were still damaged and there are scratches on the sides," he said.
