Recently, people have been sharing the outrageously high prices of certain dishes at restaurants. It started with the RM1k fish, then the RM 100 sotong and just today we heard about the RM 18 kailan with salted fish.
As if that isn’t enough, a receipt was shared on Twitter by the Jabatan Netizen Malaysia account which showed a restaurant that is charging RM 0.50 just to tie or “ikat mati” a drink.
You might think that it’s just 50sen, calm down la but tell me, did you have to pay for “ikat mati” before this?
As of now, little to nothing is known about the receipt. We have no idea is it is actually real or just fake. The twitter user just posted it with an emoji as the caption.
Many netizens have started sharing their hilarious thoughts on the receipt, and here’s some of them:
The Trade and Consumer Affairs Bureau investigated the complain and found that the price list of the restaurant did not indicate that an additional fee of RM 0.50 will be charged for "ikat mati", so they were issued a fine.
This is their statement on FB:
The way the prices of some mundane items have risen, we have to also ask if the business owners are doing okay? Will they be able to gain a profit while maintaining their regular prices even though the prices of the raw materials are increasing?
Maybe it’s time we look at this in a different angle and start finding ways to help local business owners. If they are given reasonable wholesale prices, then only can they charge the customers fairly.
