The recent flood has left thousands of cars stranded or swept away. When it comes to the salvaging process, the extent of the flood damage is the main factor that determines the car's outcome.
Whether or not it can be up and running again or vice versa, it's best to initiate the following steps once you've recovered it:
Disconnect the electrical components
One of the major don'ts is to avoid starting the car. Instead, identify and quickly remove any electrical components such as battery and fuses to prevent electrical shock.
Clean and air out your car as soon as possible.
Days of water exposure can lead to mold build-up and strange odor. Start by removing the seats and carpets, then clean off as much stubborn flood residue as you can by using some heavy-duty cleaning agents.
To remove the humidity and musty odor, experts recommend using moisture-absorbent products such as baking soda and silica gels. They're known to speed up the deodorizing process so you'll need a handful amount of these once a day, until the excessive moisture is finally gone.
Also, be sure to open the doors and roll down the windows for better air circulation.
Extract the fluids
As flood waters have seeped into the components, it's crucial to prevent extensive damage by draining out any necessary fluid- oil, coolant, transmission fluid and brake fluid.
Contact your insurance company
If you have a car insurance plan, immediately verify with your provider on the coverage for flood-related damages.
