Starting new skincare is always exciting, especially when reviews show proof of amazing results.
However, sometimes starting a new products, may have some aftereffects we're not as fond of. They could be because a skin type doesn't agree with said product (isn't working), or because it has to get ugly before it gets pretty (purging).
What are the differences?
We're here to draw out which is which so you know to keep pushing on for amazing end results, or stop entirely.
Purging:
1. Lasts 2-8 weeks
2. Occurs in where you usually get pimples
3. Doesn't leave behind marks
4. Happens all at once (a cluster)
5. Caused when using reactive products like retinol, AHAs, BHAs, exfoliants, and vitamin C
Breakouts:
1. Lasts longer
2. Occurs in new places
3. Leaves behind marks
4. Happens gradually over a long time
5. Doesn't have to be reactive products
What do you do?
If your face is showing symptoms of a breakout, then it would be best to stop the product completely, as it could worsen your condition.
However, if it is purging, especially if you've recently started a reactive product, then hang in there. It may not look good for about 3 months, but the effects thereafter could be the skin of your dreams.
