Renowned New Zealand chef and food content creator, Andy Hearnden, recently turned his attention to fried rice dishes from around the globe, and Malaysia's Nasi Goreng Kampung emerged as his top pick.
In a video shared on his popular Facebook page, Andy Cooks, the chef tested three variations of fried rice: Malaysia's Nasi Goreng Kampung, Peru's Arroz Chaufa, and Vietnam's Cơm Chiên. Known for his approachable cooking style, Andy meticulously prepared each dish from scratch, staying true to their traditional recipes before giving them a taste test and declaring his winner.
When it came to Malaysia's Nasi Goreng Kampung, Andy was blown away by the bold yet harmonious flavours. The dish's signature spiciness, combined with the crunch of crispy fried anchovies, left a lasting impression. Adding to the experience was the runny yolk of a sunny-side-up egg, which Andy described as elevating the dish to another level.
"Wow, that is so good! The spiciness is amazing. The amount of umami is through the roof, and with the creamy egg yolk, I can't get enough of that," Andy exclaimed in the video.
Ultimately, the Malaysian fried rice stood out among the three contenders. "Out of the three, the Nasi Goreng Kampung wins this for me. This is delicious. Its spicy, its full of umami, and its got great texture from the fried anchovy," Andy declared.
For a chef who has previously praised fried rice dishes from Korea and Thailand, adding Malaysia's Nasi Goreng Kampung to his list of favorite's was a noteworthy moment.
The video, which runs just under 10 minutes, quickly gained traction online, especially among Malaysian fans. Proud comments flooded the post, with many expressing excitement over seeing their beloved national dish celebrated on an international stage.
