Gone are the days of digging through your pockets for loose change just to use a public toilet. In an era where everything from parking to vending machines has gone digital, even restrooms are getting a tech upgrade.
A public toilet in Solaris, Mont Kiara, has recently introduced a cashless payment system, allowing visitors to enter with just a tap of their card or a quick scan of a QR code. The entry fee? RM1.20 no fumbling for coins required.
Joni Lynne, who first noticed the upgrade, shared the new payment method on social media, sparking mixed reactions. While some welcomed the convenience, others wondered if a basic toilet stop should come with an extra price tag especially when the facilities are, as visitor Kathleen put it, nothing fancy.
Describing the restroom as compact, with only a couple of cubicles and a sink positioned near the toilet bowls, Kathleen questioned whether the experience was worth the RM1.20 entry fee.
While cashless transactions make payments seamless, they also raise concerns about accessibility. What happens if someone doesn't have their card or phone on hand? Are public toilets becoming a privilege rather than a necessity?
Whether you see it as a step toward efficiency or just another charge to add to the list, one thing is for sure carrying coins might soon be a thing of the past, even for life's most basic needs.
