Chia seeds are a popular superfood, often praised for their high fiber content and digestive benefits. But according to a board-certified gastroenterologist, eating them the wrong way can actually lead to serious health issues.
In a video posted showing improperly soaked chia seeds, the doctor noted that a common mistake many make is adding water to dry chia seeds and drinking them too soon. In said video, while a few seeds bloated properly, most clumped at the top.
He confirmed that chia seeds must be soaked before eating, and even showing an example of a patient who swallowed dry chia seeds and drank water afterward.
The seeds expanded in the patient's esophagus, causing a blockage that required treatment.
The Right Way to Eat Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are healthy, but you need to eat them the right way. If you eat them dry and then drink water, they can swell up in your throat and cause choking or blockages. That's why its important to soak them first.
How to soak chia seeds:
- Mix 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with a glass of water or juice.
- Let them sit for at least 30 minutes.
- The seeds will absorb the liquid and turn into a jelly-like mix. Now they're safe to eat or drink.
Why soaking is important:
- Soaked chia seeds are easier to digest.
- They help with constipation by making it easier to go to the bathroom.
- They're full of good stuff like fiber, omega-3, and calcium for strong bones.
Tip: Start with 1 tablespoon a day. Once your body gets used to it, you can have more if needed.
