GOPENG: A man who went viral after a video of him aggressively while swinging a parang and sabit in an incident in front of the Gopeng Police Station spread through social media, tested positive for drugs.
Perak police chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the urine screening test found that the 61-year-old suspect was positive for methamphetamine and heroin.
He said the check also found that the man involved had 16 previous records related to criminal and narcotics cases.
“In the incident at 8 am today, the suspect entered the Gopeng Police Station area on a motorcycle while carrying a parang and sabit.
"The suspect then swung the weapons he was carrying in front of the entrance of the station's inquiry office where a police officer tried to calm him down," he said in a statement here today.
According to him, the suspect then rushed out to Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur but was blocked by the police in front of the station gate.
He said a patrol car was also parked in the middle of the road to prevent the public from passing through the area.
“The suspect then went towards the vehicle and climbed the roof while swinging the parang and sabit he was carrying to avoid being arrested.
“However, a team from the Gopeng Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene to help the police make the arrest. The suspect was arrested when he fell on the road due to water spray by firefighters, "he said.
He added that, based on preliminary information, the man involved had gone on a rampage and confiscated public motorcycles in the Lawan Kuda Public Market area before heading to the Kopisan housing area and Gopeng Police Station.
"The suspect was detained along with a machete, sickle, a motorcycle and four keys. The remand application for the suspect will be carried out tomorrow.
"The case is being investigated in accordance with Section 427 of the Penal Code, Section 90 of the Police Act 1967, Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 and Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he said.
Earlier, several video recordings showing the incident were spread on social media after being recorded by the public around the scene.
Based on the footage, the shirtless man and only wearing jeans was seen standing on the roof of a police patrol car while shouting and swinging a parang and sabit.
