Mental health was so misunderstood in the old days’ while people refused to acknowledge it and learn about it. Thanks to the Internet, mental health is no longer a taboo topic and people are not afraid of discussing it. As famous people confessed that they too, suffered from mental illnesses, society has begun to put their attention towards it. With the help of the media industry, people are more aware of this subject and it helps in providing more insights to people about mental health and mental illnesses.
Depression
Undoubtedly, depression is becoming one of the most common mental illnesses that we have heard of nowadays. The deaths of Robin Williams, Sulli, Chester Bennington and more have surprised the society as the news brought out the topic of depression. As the medical terms explained, depression, also known as the major depressive disorder is a usual and crucial mental illness that influences one’s feelings, ways of thinking and actions negatively. In common language, depression is more than just being sad. It is a space in one’s mind that one has no control or power of, it is something that one cannot escape.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Portraying depression is not an easy task. Hence, hands down to Netflix for ‘13 reasons why’, an original Netflix series that follows the mind of Hannah Baker, a high school teenager who suffered from depression and killed herself, explains the thirteen reasons for her action in detail. This television series has created debates among critics with lots of positive and negative comments on it. After the release of the first season, Netflix also aired 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons, featuring the production team and mental health specialists explaining their personal experiences in operating on the series and handling different problems, including bullying, depression and sexual assault.
Personality Disorder
Several personality disorders are commonly seen in our daily lives, which include antisocial personality disorders where many filmmakers are inspired by this mental illness into creating lots of movies. In general, personality disorders have impacts on at least two of these areas, which are the way of thinking about oneself and others, way of responding emotionally, way of relating to other people and way of controlling one’s behavior. Speaking on antisocial personality disorder specifically, it is a model of ignoring or infringing the rights of others. A person who is diagnosed with an antisocial personality disorder may not be in line with societal standards, may constantly lie or mislead others, or may behave emotionally.
Gone Girl (2014)
Rosamund Pike’s performance as Amy Elliott Dunne in Gone Girl is spectacular and extraordinary while she managed to portray the antisocial personality disorders perfectly. This American psychological thriller uses flashbacks as the opening of the movie, where the plot of the story flows when Amy writes her diary, telling audiences how she met, fell in love and punished her husband, Nick Dunne for being unloyal and sloppy in their marriage. As a patient of this mental illness, Amy has no conscience towards Nick and would do things to hurt him to a high degree of psychopathy, where she punished Nick for her enjoyment. Be sure to catch a glimpse of Pike’s act that brings Amy’s character to light and the public’s attention to antisocial personality disorder.
Schizophrenia
Looking at the complexity of the name, it is normal that the society may not have any interest or awareness towards this mental illness. Schizophrenia is known as an incurable and serious mental disorder that influences the way of thinking, feels and acts. Schizophrenia patients may seem like they have detached from reality. Thus, causing them to have delusions, hallucinations, trouble with thinking and focus, and demotivated.
The Uninvited (2009)
Returning home from a mental institution, Anna, who suffered from schizophrenia reunited with her sister, Alex, her father and her father’s girlfriend, Rachel. The suspense of the plot grows greater when the symptoms of schizophrenia were increasingly shown throughout the movie. This movie is no doubt an amazing piece of work that portrays schizophrenia in an uncomplicated and simple way so that the viewer can understand the symptoms of this mental illness more easily. The ending of this movie will surely send a chill down your spine!
