An orphaned mountain gorilla named Ndakasi who took the internet by storm some time ago has passed away in the arms of her caretaker, Baumi, at age 14, after a heartbreaking battle with a prolonged illness.
When the rangers found her back in 2007, poor Nbakasi was clinging to her dead mother's body, and she had been under Baumi's care ever since. During that time, an armed militia was committing a series of massacres of gorilla families and her mother sadly became one of the victims.
In regards to her death, caretaker Baumi said, "It was a privilege to support and care for such a loving creature, especially knowing the trauma Ndakasi suffered at a very young age. It was Ndakasi's sweet nature and intelligence that helped me to understand the connection between humans and Great Apes and why we should do everything in our power to protect them."
Ndakasi's death and overall life journey highlight the importance of protecting wildlife and triumphing human greed that values profit over nature.
Earth is their home too.
