A video circulating on social media on Monday caused a wave of concern among Kuala Lumpur residents, showing what appeared to be a sinkhole forming near Jalan Sultan Ismail, heading towards Jalan Raja Chulan. The short, 10-second clip depicted firefighters managing an area that seemed to have suffered from land subsidence, sparking fears of another sinkhole incident.
In the video, the affected road was seen cordoned off with cones and yellow caution tape. Water was visibly flowing through the site, adding to the alarm. Netizens quickly expressed their concerns, as the area is a major thoroughfare in the city.
However, fears of a potential sinkhole were soon addressed by a spokesperson from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). The spokesperson clarified that there was no new sinkhole incident at the site. Instead, the situation arose due to a burst water pipe.
"The Selangor Water pipe has burst. Please refer to Air Selangor for further inquiries," the spokesperson told The Star.
Despite the initial alarm, DBKL's clarification helped ease the fears of residents and commuters. The city continues to closely monitor the area to ensure safety and repair the damaged pipe. Air Selangor, the water service provider, has been alerted to the issue, and further updates are expected.
For now, motorists are advised to use alternative routes as authorities work to resolve the situation. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining infrastructure in bustling urban areas like Kuala Lumpur, where such events can disrupt daily life.
