Fatality Risk For Smokers Infected With Covid-19 Is 14 Times Higher

Smoking is one of the main public health problems because cigarettes are the cause of more than 25 disorders including cancer, heart diseases, and others. 

At least 1.68 billion people around the globe are addicted to nicotine in cigarettes.

More than 10 million people die because of smoking every year.

Dr. Manas Phothaporn, deputy director-general of the Department of Medical Services, stated that smokers who contract COVID-19 are anticipated to have 14 times more severe conditions as opposed to non-smokers. Hence, they have a higher risk of death.

Pneumonia caused by Covid-19 could cause death as smoking will reduce the immune system and harm the lungs.

Therefore, he advised the smokers to quit smoking so that their immune system could be restored. Besides, it could also slow down the inflammation in lung tissues.  Lastly, it will help smokers to save money during the current economic crisis.
