Choose the good quality houseplant initially could avoid a lot of potential problems later. So, observe the potted plant carefully before purchasing could help us save a lot of fussing maintenance job later. Besides that, a good quality potted houseplant may adapt and establish in the new place better compare to the poor quality houseplant. We will not facing the newly bought houseplant wilting, after a few month only placing in the house.
The roots should be well established but not entangled.
The roots will start circling within the bottom of the pot when it is grow longer. After that it will make the soil compaction and the water will drain out from the pot quickly and hard to retain within the soil. As result, we have watering more frequent to keep the houseplant alive. So, check the roots on the bottom of the pot, if the roots have grown out from the pot we should not buy it. It mean the plant have sitting in the nursery very long already.
The branches should be grow vigorously but not overgrown.
Is the houseplant the bigger the better? If the houseplant have grown bigger than the pot, we have to re-pot the house plant. In order to save the trouble from repotting, we should choose the medium size house plant instead of the big one. Unless you’re a very skillful plant grower, repotting may make the houseplant suffer from transplants shock and need some time to regain the vigorous. Choose the medium size houseplant, and there still have a lot of space for the houseplant to grow. If you have bought the overgrown potted plants, then you have to do repotting to a bigger size pot to make sure the plants could continue live happily within its pot.
Free from diseases and pest
Check the leaves surface and underneath, a healthy plants should not show the sign for pest chewing and disease affected brown spots. Avoid to buy the houseplant with wilted leaves except the old leaves wilted naturally. If the plants affected by the pest or disease, pruning the affected parts is required. So, we will take some times to wait for the houseplant to re-grow to its most presentable look.
New shoot or new buds are growing
Before buying the houseplant, check whether the houseplant with new sprouted shoots? That mean the houseplant still growing vigorously and not the newly transplanted houseplant or unhealthy houseplant which have stop growing already. So, new shoot and new buds is a sign of healthy houseplants and it is able to continue grow bigger healthily and we still have a long times until the next maintenance pruning and repotting is needed.
Therefore, be a meticulous buyer and check the detail of the potted plant before buying to save the fussing maintenance jobs later. Do remember the quality of the houseplants we buy are not decided by its size, the theory of the bigger the better is not applicable in buying houseplant.
