A man has been arrested for allegedly throwing a metal chain at a car windscreen on Jalan Penang, George Town, on Wednesday. The incident, which went viral on social media, sparked concerns over public safety in the area.
Timur Laut deputy police chief Lee Swee Sake said the arrest was made after a report was lodged by the driver, a 36-year-old woman, at around 1.50 PM. "According to the woman, an unknown motorcyclist suddenly swung a metal chain at her front car windscreen while she was driving," he said in a statement, as reported by Bernama.
The suspect, a 33-year-old factory worker, was apprehended on Jalan Padang Tembak the same day. Authorities confiscated a metal chain and other items during the arrest. Further investigations revealed that the man has a prior criminal record for two offences.
The suspect has been remanded until December 28 to assist with investigations under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.
The incident gained widespread attention after videos and photos of the motorcyclists actions circulated on social media platforms. Concerned citizens called for stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying addressed the incident in a Facebook post, confirming that she had reached out to the police. Lim urged for increased patrols in the area to ensure public safety.
