A 24-year-old fresh graduate, Carmen, has captured attention online for purchasing her dream car, a BYD SEAL Premium, despite earning a modest RM2,500 monthly salary.
In a viral Threads post on 20 February, Carmen shared that she bought the electric vehicle (EV) with her own hard-earned money, with her mother acting only as a guarantor for the car loan. The RM180,000 price tag left many surprised, but Carmen explained that she wanted to fulfill her dream while she was still young.
"I know I can afford this car in the future, but I don't want to regret not owning it now," she said.
A psychology graduate who secured a full scholarship, Carmen previously worked as a full-time translator, earning between RM4,000 and RM9,000 a month. She diligently saved RM31,000 for the down payment, without financial assistance from her parents.
Currently working as a therapist for children with autism, Carmen also juggles multiple freelance jobs. She continues working as a part-time translator, teaches English to Chinese students, and earns income as a food reviewer on TikTok and Instagram under @thefoodiegeng.
To finance her car, she pays between RM1,600 and RM1,700 monthly, with a goal of clearing the loan in seven years. Despite her parents' initial concerns about EVs, she reassured them that she would handle all expenses, from insurance to maintenance.
The young therapist also addressed criticism of her financial decision, acknowledging that it might not have been the most practical choice. However, she remains confident that the challenge will drive her to work harder.
"Even if I struggle, it will be a lesson that helps me grow," she said.
Carmen's story has sparked discussions about financial independence and ambition, inspiring many young Malaysians to chase their dreams despite societal expectations.
