Imagine being surrounded by a group of people chatting away various worldy topics, deeply immersed from one conversation to another. You're probably thinking "how do they get the conversation going?". Surely, conversing with people doesn't sound overbearing to some. However, not everyone shares the same sentiment because being a conversationalist (let alone a great one), can be daunting.
Being a great conversationalist is one of the highly regarded skills to have, especially in the workplace. Of course, this matters too when it comes to social interactions. You'll either be blown away by the person you're conversing with because the energy is just off the wall, or slowly dying on the inside because the conversation seems to be one-sided. If you're the latter, then it's time for some quick conversational skills learning.
Don't hog the limelight
The conversation shouldn't just be dominated by one person, or else it'll start looking like a lecture or public speaking. You might get too excited and have the urge to talk about so many things, but hogging the limelight won't get the conversation far. Roll the dice to the next person once your part of the conversation is done. That way, the conversation gets more diverse and interesting.
Be respectful of people's opinions
Whenever another person has a completely different opinion from yours (even if it's controversial), be respectful by listening to what the person needs to say without cutting off his or her conversation. Let's be real, some things aren't worth arguing unless if the person is being racist or downright bullying.
Just be yourself
You don't have to sound like a motivational speaker or stand-up comedian just to get people transfixed at you. Just be your true self by talking about things that you're most passionate about and avoid sounding forced. People are more drawn into authenticity instead of pretentiousness. So, don't be afraid to just let things off of your chest (the good way).
