Toxic styrene gas spewed out of the LG Polymers plant near the southern city of Visakhapatnam on May 7. At least 11 people were killed and more than 800 people are hospitalized for treatment. The protesters placed the coffins of three of the victims of the gas leak in front of the plant on May 9 and demanded the factory be shut down quickly. Besides, they also called for the arrest of the factory management.

Indian police filed negligence and culpable homicide complaint against the management of the LG Polymers plant. On May 9, LG Polymers released a statement to apologize to all those affected by the incident. Moreover, the company also expressed that it would provide all possible support to ensure those affected and their families were taken care of. Furthermore, the company also expressed its commitment to work closely with the concerned Indian authorities in investigating the cause of this incident. Based on the primary investigations, It is suggested that the leaking vapour from a styrene monomer storage tank was the cause of the tragedy.
