Yes! We did! This might be a fun fact that shocks you, but it is true.
In the year 1973, Tun Abdul Razak who was the prime minister at that time and Tun Hussein Onn, Malaysia deputy prime minister at that time, were both scheduled to be out of the country on the 3rd of August.
With no one around to make sure that the country was still running well, they knew they has to find someone to take charge and be given the title of Prime Minister just for the day. Who else would they turn to other than Tun V. T. Sambanthan, who at that time as the Minister of National Unity.
The reason why Tun V. T. Sambanthan was the perfect candidate was because of his professionalism, and altruism.
Tun V. T. Sambanthan, was an icon of harmony. He understood the importance of racial harmony and foresaw that the country would be able to succeed if only individuals of multiple races all came together and harnessed our strengths to build one powerful nation.
He was also a trusted friend to Malaysia’s first prime monister Tunku Andul Rahman, who held Tun Sambanthan in high esteem and often assigned important tasks to him, separate from his ministerial duties.
As the harbinger of peace, Tun V. T. Sambanthan was sent of peace missions not only withing the country but also outside of Malaysia.
He might have just been prime minister for a day, but he has served our country for years and is one of the most esteemed Malaysian heroes.
