The Works Ministry has made an exciting announcement regarding toll payments on Malaysian highways. Beginning in September 2023, road users will have the convenience of paying tolls using credit or debit cards on 12 selected highways. This move marks a significant step towards a more open payment system, offering alternative methods to the existing Touch 'n Go and RFID options.
According to a report by Bernama, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi unveiled the list of participating highways, which includes well-known routes such as Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH), Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE), Sungai Besi Expressway (BESRAYA), New Pantai Expressway (NPE), and many more.
Minister Nanta emphasized that this open payment system aligns with the government's ongoing efforts to transition towards the multi-lane fast flow (MLFF) toll collection system, which is expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2024. MLFF aims to improve traffic flow by removing boom gates at toll plazas, enabling smoother and more efficient travel.
The MLFF system is currently undergoing testing on the SUKE expressway, with all toll plazas along the highway already equipped with this advanced technology. Previously, Pay with Debit had hinted at the implementation of an open payment system on Malaysian highways and public transport, generating anticipation among commuters.
