A tragic accident unfolded today when a woman lost her life and her 11-year-old son was seriously injured after being struck by a train while crossing the tracks near Kampung Petagas.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. when Lena Gabin, 41, and her son were walking home to Kampung Muhibbah after she picked him up from Sekolah Kebangsaan Petagas. As they crossed the railway tracks, a train traveling from Beaufort to Kota Kinabalu hit them.
Lena was pronounced dead at the scene, while her son sustained severe injuries, including the amputation of his right leg and injuries to his head and hands.
Penampang District Police Chief, Superintendent Sammy Newton, confirmed the incident and stated that a formal statement would be issued once the investigation was completed.
As reported by Buletin TV3, the fire department received an emergency call at 1:58 p.m. and promptly arrived at the scene. Fire and Rescue Chief Noorsherriyana Bohari confirmed the details, stating that the train collision occurred as the victims were crossing the tracks.
The fire department assisted in removing the body and clearing the area for authorities. The rescue operation concluded at 2:47 p.m., allowing the train to continue its journey to Tanjung Aru station.
