In a shocking case in Kuala Lumpur, a nasi lemak seller was fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court after physically assaulting his seven-year-old step son for failing to answer his math homework correctly.
Judge Norina Zainol Abidin handed down the fine to the 38-year-old stepfather, who had pleaded guilty to the charges against him. Additionally, the court ruled that if he fails to pay the fine, he would serve a six-month prison sentence.
As part of his sentence, the stepfather was ordered to exhibit good behavior with a five-year bond without the need for surety. He must also undergo parenting counseling recommended by the Department of Social Welfare (JKM). Furthermore, he was instructed to complete 200 hours of community service over the next six months, beginning immediately.
The charges stemmed from an incident in which the nasi lemak seler physically assaulted the victim by canning him in several parts of his body when the child was 6 years old.
The case came to light when the Health Clinic School Team of the Kuala Lumpur Health Clinic Unit conducted health examinations and vaccine immunizations for first-grade students at a primary school. During the examination, nurses and medical officers noticed bruising on the victim's arms, prompting further investigation.

A medical officer found multiple scars on the child's wrists and back, along with bruises on his legs. When questioned about these injuries, the victim tearfully revealed that he had been frequently abused by his stepfather.
The doctor contacted the child's classroom teacher, who then suggested reporting the matter to JKM through the Talian Kasih hotline. On June 23, the victim, while assisting his stepfather and mother before school, was subjected to the abusive incident. He later confided in a friend at school, revealing that he had been beaten by his father for his inability to answer a math question.
The prosecution was made under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment for a maximum of 20 years, or both.
