A video of a Chinese tourist sharing her experience of getting bribed by a Malaysian police officer during her trip has surfaced online and it has quickly gone viral.
In the video, the woman narrated her experience of getting followed by a police car one night while going home after a dinner with her Malaysian friend in Kuala Lumpur. Their taxi driver had to stop the vehicle when he noticed a police car was trailing them from behind. The policeman then walked up to them, specifically asking the Chinese woman for her identifications. She then explained then she is from China and does not possess an IC. The policeman proceeded to ask for her passport, in which she responded, "I have it in my hotel, I didn't bring it along with me."
She offered to show the officer her China's identification cards, her Hong Kong and Macau pass and the photo of her passport. The police officer insisted that he needed to examine her passport to confirm that she entered Malaysia legally, or he'd have to take her to the police station. Panicked, the woman started calling the China's embassy but to no avail.
The taxi driver then quietly told her that the police officer is actually trying to take bribes from her, to which she said "I don't have cash with me." The taxi driver was ever so kindly willing to lend her a RM100 to pay the police officer off. The police officer, however, wasn't happy with the amount and demanded more. The driver had to give him another RM100, which was still wasn't enough for the officer. Her Malaysian friend had to beg the police officer in Malay, saying they were out of cash.
In the end, the police officer let them go.
The video was uploaded by a random user on TikTok, which you can watch below:
This is the purported incident that the woman said occurred to her while she was in Malaysia. She also added that a friend of hers from Malaysia had informed her about how some Malaysian police officers would follow you to the ATM and watch as you withdraw money, or they would lock you up at the police station where you would be at risk of harassment from the policemen if you are a woman.
Netizens who have watched this video however, have insisted that there are always two sides of the story and the officer in the video could also be wrongly framed, and there was no evidence of bribery caught on camera.
