As of May 29, Malaysia had total infections of 7,732 and a total of 6,235 recoveries (or 80.6%). Malaysia also has not recorded death cases for 7 consecutive days.

However, the number of new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia has jumped to 3 digits, in which there are 103 Covid-19 cases being reported on May 29. It was an unexpected increase after 15 cases and 10 cases were recorded on May 27 and May 28 respectively.

Of the 103 new cases, seven are imported while the rests are local transmissions. Only 12 of the local cases involved Malaysians.

According to the Health director-general Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, there were 53 new cases from the Pedas cluster. He added that the infected patients are close contacts of the positive cases associated with the factory workers in Negri Sembilan.

Besides, a new cluster was discovered at a cleaning services company, where 24 Bangladeshis were tested positive of COVID-19. This new cluster was identified after a private clinic carried out screening on the workers of the cleaning services company.

20 of the infected Bangladeshis live in a hostel in Kuala Langat, Selangor whereas the others live in an apartment in Nilai, Negri Sembilan.

Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah stated that they have recognized 428 close contacts of the cases in the cleaning services cluster and that these people would be screened.

Based on Dr Noor Hisham, starting from May 4, almost 78% of our positive Covid-19 cases involved foreign workers who are staying under the crowded living conditions.

He commented that it was difficult for foreign workers to practice social distancing in those limited areas. This would lead to the whole household to become infected after one person is tested positive.

He added that they would discuss this issue of crowded living conditions as soon as possible. He also urged employers to screen their foreign workers.
