a 75-year-old man and his wife have spent the last decade of their lives collecting and hoarding garbage to the point where their house is covered almost completely with an avalanche of trash.
South Korea's national television network, SBS reported on the shocking story which quickly went viral. The condition of the two-storey house was beyond anything anyone has ever witnessed. It has gotten so bad to the point that Choi, the elderly man would need to squeeze himself out of the window on the second floor if he wants to go out.
Upon investigation by the film crew, they were shocked to find that their son, aged 40, is also living with them. The inside of the house was crammed with garbage that the surrounding was overwhelmed with odor and leaves just a tiny space for the little family to sit, eat and sleep.
Upon seeing the worrying health condition of the elderly couple, the production crew managed to convince them to get themselves checked in a nearby hospital. What the doctor found upon their examination was, to say the least, shocking.
According to the doctor, the wife suffered a critical heart condition that'd require surgery. During one of the visits, the elderly man finally opened up and revealed the actual reason why he has been collecting trash.
Choi revealed he felt hurt seeing his son do nothing around the house, refusing to make a living for himself. Motivated by guilt, he started to collect any "useful" item that he could find in garbage bins to be used later by his son once he and his wife pass away.
The production crew managed to convince Choi to let them clean the house, and the next day over 220 volunteers arrived at the scene to collect over 150 tons of garbage that Choi and his wife had collected over the years.
Choi and his family now live in a clean house, free of any garbage, and he vows never to hoard trash ever again for the sake of his wife's health, whom he loves very much. Let's hope the son will change his ways and stop being a burden to his parents.
