The United Malays National Organization (UMNO) has committed to serve in a unity government that is not headed by Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Barisan Nasional MPs met with leaders of both Perikatan Nasional and Barisan Nasional to discuss their proposal for forming a new government, according to a statement issued by UMNO secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

The statement reads: "The supreme council (MKT) unanimously voted to support and respect the King's directive that Barisan Nasional join in the Unity Administration that is not led by the Perikatan Nasional in order to facilitate the formation of a stable and prosperous government."

Apart from declaring their support for a non-PN led unity government, Maslan has also added in the statement that "MKT has also agreed that all newly elected MPs from the party will accept any unity government or other form of government that is enacted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong."

Additionally, he stated that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would have the backing of the Supreme Council in his roles as president of UMNO and chairman of Barisan Nasional.
