A recent incident involving the verbal abuse directed against a toll booth operator on the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) has ignited fury across social media platforms.
The altercation, which unfolded on Monday, gained widespread attention after recordings and images of the incident were shared on Twitter by a user identified as @AzfaMierul.
Reportedly, the unfortunate encounter involved the sibling of the Twitter account holder, which explained his furious X post.
Initial reports suggest that the incident stemmed from a monetary issue with the driver's Touch 'n Go (TnG) card while passing through the DUKE toll plaza in a Honda Accord vehicle. It's alleged that the card balance was insufficient, amounting to less than RM1.50.
According to transcripts of a WhatsApp conversation, the driver, unable to use his bank card and ID, resorted to cash to top up his TnG balance. However, during this exchange, he subjected the toll booth operator to verbal abuse. The operator clarified that their booth no longer offers reload or cash options, as the system has recently been upgraded to accept debit/credit card payments. However, the driver still directed his anger at him.
He reportedly hurled insults and questioned the operator's profession, despite him maintaining a professional demeanor and refraining from retaliation. The driver's outburst included accusations of the operator living off undeserved wages and being a burden to society.
Only when the operator began recording the interaction on his smartphone did the driver reportedly moderate his tone.
The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has issued a response to the post on X and has urged the victim to step forward and file a police report.
Many have condemned the driver's behavior, calling for accountability and respect in all interactions, regardless of circumstances.
