Wired as such, audiences most often than not, always end up rooting for protagonists of movies or TV shows. It is rather rare that people root for the villains of a plotline.
However, as we've grown with age and time, we've come to understand that every villain has a story, and to a certain degree, they become relatable characters.
Of course bad deeds should never be encouraged or excused, we're also not going to be the ones to deny the appeal of darkness.
