As Sam Wilson prepares to take flight as the new Captain America this Friday, another group of unconventional heroes is set to make their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) this summer. John Walker, the man who once wielded but ultimately failed to carry Captain America's shield, is making his return alongside Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, and a band of misfits in Marvel Studio's upcoming film, Thunderbolts.
The latest Super Bowl trailer for Thunderbolts gives fans a closer look at Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's plan to introduce her own version of Earth's mightiest heroes. With the Avengers seemingly absent, Fontaine assembles a team of morally ambiguous figures from the MCUs Disney+ series and previous films.
Leading the charge is Bucky Barnes, the former Winter Soldier, who now finds himself navigating a world where second chances are hard-earned. He is joined by Yelena Belova, the new Black Widow and a highly skilled assassin, as well as John Walker, now taking up the U.S. Agent mantle after his failed stint as Captain America.
Also in the mix is Taskmaster, the deadly fighter introduced in Black Widow, who now leans into the role of an antihero. The group also includes Red Guardian, Yelena's over-the-top yet formidable father, and Ghost, the elusive character from Ant-Man and the Wasp, who has seemingly gained control over her quantum-phasing abilities.
Much like the original Avengers, the Thunderbolts struggle to find common ground. The trailer showcases their difficulties in working together, with even their team name sparking disagreement. Red Guardian, however, remains the most enthusiastic about their potential, believing they can become the heroes on the Wheaties box.
With high-stakes action, intense conflicts, and a blend of humor, Thunderbolts is shaping up to be a thrilling addition to the MCU. Directed by Jake Schreier, the film boasts an all-star cast, including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Marvel fans won't have to wait long to see this unpredictable team in action Thunderbolts is set to hit theaters on May 2.
