In the United States, Black Friday is an unofficial name for the Friday following the famous Thanksgiving Day. Tracing back to 1952, the day after Thanksgiving has been referred as the start of Christmas shopping season. However, this is not how it got it's name.
According to report, the earliest record of the term "Black Friday" was originated in Philadelphia. The term was used by the local police to describe the heavy traffic that would normally occur on the day after Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. The usage dates to at least 1961.
To summarise the above two records, the term has been referred to as a busy traffic Friday after Thanksgiving. And the name only become popular until recent decades, after being popularized by the global retailers.
As it became more widely used, another famous explanation surfaced, saying that this very day marks the point in the year when retailers start making profit, therefore it goes from being "in the red" to being "in the black".
